National Prison Radio broadcasts into prison cells across England and Wales 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They aim to reduce reoffending, by supporting people through their sentences and preparing them for life after release.Through its diverse programming schedule, they aim to promote a culture of positive change in prison, while acknowledging and addressing the challenges of imprisonment.
The grant from the Company allowed them to work alongside The Shannon Trust to develop radio features promoting Shannon Trust support services for foreign national prisoners to learn English while serving their sentence. They created a 12-month National Prison Radio campaign to promote the work of The Shannon Trust, using the most prevalent non-English languages used by foreign national offenders. These included Urdu, Arabic, Polish, Romanian and Albanian.
The campaign was made up of short information packages lasting two minutes and highlighting the work of the Shannon Trust, the different programmes they run, and how new learners can find out more information in their prison. These audio packages were released 20 times a week during peak broadcast hours, for six months.
