Give a Book

Give a Book is a charity dedicated to promoting books and the pleasure of reading in the hardest places. Our main work is in prisons, schools and with disadvantaged children. We see again and again how reading changes people’s lives.

Weavers funding was used to support a 3 year reading project in HMP YOI Isis. In this challenging prison of 600 young men (18-25, 75% BAME, high gang affiliation), only 20% of whom visited the library, they have now established a regular prison-wide reading challenge, on-going reading groups on both house blocks, book support for Well Being Days and Family Days, audio books, micro fiction competition, and regular reading celebrations. They actively brought reading to the residential blocks, rather than relying on visits to the library. To gauge from the number of books that ’disappear’ from the shelves, reading has now reached many.

These are the kind of books I want to read. That make you think. Everything’s better now I’m a reader. Even my dreams are better. I never used to remember my dreams but since I’ve been reading I remember them all. - Prisoner at HMP YOI Isis
The project has raised the profile of reading around the prison. With the dads we have held book-choosing workshops where dads used bookplates to create special messages for their children. I smiled when one man asked for Burglar Bill to give to his children but then he explained that that was a book read to him as a child and the workshop had reminded him and now he wanted to read it to his children. Burglar Bill is about a pair of burglars who reform to look after their child so maybe it was the perfect book to choose. Promoting reading around the prison allows me to talk to the young men about anything and everything. They are shyly curious and want to learn but very much in their own way, in their own time. The books we have put on the shelves on each wing allow them to do that. - David Kendall - Project Lead
When I’m out I’m going to eat healthy, stay away from MacDonald’s, and keep reading. - Prisoner at HMP YOI Isis
